If you can stretch your budget at all. Find a kangoo. Much better car. With very little known faults, they drive better and have much more power, much better specs, such as power windows, central locking, rear wiper and demister. Alternatively I had a s2 2008 diesel berlingo. It was very good. Much better than the petrol ones.
An upgrade late last year enhanced value, adding dual sliding doors and a rear view camera as standard. Other safety items are conspicuously lacking. Overseas, the Berlingo scores four stars for safety but that's for a car with two airbags. Our test version lacks a passenger airbag, an option, as are side airbags.
The Citroën Berlingo is 4.75 meters long on its most extended body and offers a wheelbase of more than 2.97 meters. Its good height results in an exceptionally spacious cabin, more significant than that of the vast majority of SUVs and family cars. Legroom, both in the rear and front seats, is very generous.
Citroen makes a lot these days about how comfortable its cars are, but the execution has been hit and miss so far. Fortunately the Berlingo is a hit on that front – everyone who had a ride in it
The Peugeot Expert Teepee has a huge spacious interior, is capable of seating nine and has a range of economical engines. It does have a van like appearance but it is good value and smart looking. The Citroen Berlingo Multispace is also a car aimed at families and small businesses as it is built from tough rather than luxurious materials.
Citroen SpaceTourer. Not to be confused with the C4 version that shares its name, the SpaceTourer is based on Citroen’s Dispatch van. However, the SpaceTourer does a good job of dispatching any notion of this being a basic vehicle and instead it can be specced to an impressive level with seats, sunroof and hands-free boot opening.
The Peugeot Partner is definitely that van among this trio. All three vans get the same engine options, with either a 1.2-litre Puretech petrol or 1.5-litre BlueHDi Euro 6 diesel engine, and each
The XTR+ is powered by a 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine producing 90bhp and 159lb-ft of torque at a low 1,500rpm, which translates into a good amount of grunt at low speeds.
We routinely got 3.0m/kWh (which is mpg for electric cars) from the Citroën – good for 120 to 140-ish miles to a charge in wintry conditions, or less in cold weather if you’re on the motorway. Spring eventually sprang towards the end of my time with the ë-Berlingo, which saw more clement weather and a real-world range of 160 miles or more.
PROS Lots of passenger space Huge boot Comfy ride CONS No powerful engine option Interior feels cheap in places Not much fun to drive Written by Alan Taylor-Jones Published: 28 June 2022 Updated: 16 November 2023 Overview The Citroen Berlingo is a refreshingly no-nonsense proposition in the new car market.
