The display is always much brighter than comparable screens e.g. from a macbook. If an image has the dynamic range then it will show the bright parts e.g suns in sunsets really bright like the iPhones already go pretty bright (1290 nits) but the iPad seems to hit some magic number where its bright enough to look realistic. The 11" is the pure, true iPad experience. It is the best hand-held device, it's light, and the form-factor thrives in portrait mode.
